Lighting Design

Problem

Conventional desk lamps only provide functional illumination, lacking both symbolic meaning and a deeper interaction with perception. They remain static objects, disconnected from the richness of how humans actually experience light.

Solution

This design draws inspiration from the mantis shrimp, whose eyes perceive beyond the visible spectrum. Through rotating polarized filters, translucent glass, and colored elements, the lamp allows users to experience light as layered — one part familiar, another suggestive of the unseen.

Challenge

The main difficulty was translating a biological phenomenon into a tangible, user-friendly object. Balancing minimal form with dynamic interaction required precise material selection, technical control of filters, and a design that remains intuitive yet expressive.

Summary

The result is a contemporary lighting object that merges functionality with metaphor. By echoing the mantis shrimp's unique vision, it offers not only illumination but also a subtle reminder of the hidden dimensions of perception.
